Viennese Composers with a Viennese Soloist
The Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra is bringing masterpieces by Mozart and Schubert to Keszthely with world-renowned classical pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja, who has been living in Vienna for decades. The concert will be conducted by the orchestra’s artistic director, one of the world’s most acclaimed cellists, István Várdai. These names alone guarantee a great experience, but let’s take a closer look at the works!

Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue in C minor, K. 546, is one of his most emotional pieces, in which Mozart composed an uncharacteristically dark and stormy work. The archaic form further enhances the seriousness and sublimity of the piece. The Piano Concerto in A major, K. 488, is one of his most famous concertos. Here, Mozart excelled at contrasting opposing characters. While the fast outer movements are carefree and cheerful, the slow movement expresses deep sorrow and melancholy. However, from Mozart’s pen, this is a feeling that is good and uplifting to experience.

Schubert’s chamber music was influential throughout the entire 19th century. Although he did not invent the genre of the string quintet—Luigi Boccherini composed more than 100 such works—Schubert’s single string quintet nonetheless placed the already known art form on a new footing and is such a monumental creation that it virtually demands an orchestral sound.
