The Balaton Museum presents the temporary exhibition Eggs of bird! The temporary exhibition is based on a never-before-seen collection.

A significant part of the natural history collection of the Balaton Museum is the collection of bird eggs, which contains the nesting eggs of 111 species. The majority of the collection was collected by ornithologist Dr. Sándor Lovassy at the end of the 19th century, and some of the nest eggs are older than the museum itself. The fact that this collection is 100-135 years old is of inestimable scientific value.

The collection of 111 nesting boxes of bird eggs is the backbone of the temporary exhibition “Eggs of bird”. Curator Péter Németh, a conservation engineer, designed the exhibition, which covers almost 200 m2 of floor space, to display more than 470 bird eggs in their typical habitats. These four habitats are displayed on around 40 m2, and the giant diorama also features taxidermy, photographs and nests of several species.

The exhibition features 28 giant panels illustrated with colour photos and key information. The aim was to present as much information as possible about birds.

In addition to Hungarian, the exhibition is also available in English and German. In addition, a child-friendly approach has been given a significant role and a museum-educational space of more than 30 m2 has been created, where visitors can not only take a closer look at nests and feathers during museum educational sessions, but also do playful exercises at any time.

At the digital point in the exhibition, visitors can listen to the sounds of the birds on display, look at enlarged photos of the eggs and even get one or two other important pieces of information.

The temporary exhibition, which will be on display until 31 December 2025, has been made possible with the help of the Balaton Museum staff:

  • Tamás Antal taxidermist.
