Located next to the Festetics Castle, the Végh-Pataki Strudel House and Sandwich Mecca is a family business where old-fashioned homeliness and a fresh, dynamic kitchen atmosphere reinforce each other.
Since its opening in 2011, the same owner and the same enthusiasm have been driving the place forward. The interior, adorned with fabulous motifs, brings a smile to visitors’ faces from the very first step, and the aromas wafting from the kitchen immediately reveal that everything here is truly made in-house.
“We advertise by word of mouth!”
Strudel House (Rétesház)
The real pride of the Végh-Pataki Strudel House is the hand-pulled, homemade strudel. They do not over-modernize it or shorten the process—they prepare it exactly as grandmothers used to: made with strudel flour, hand-pulled, and generously filled with cottage cheese, fruit, or poppy seeds. The selection is huge, and in addition to the sweet and savoury staples, they always offer current specials, such as bacon-and-onion or even tejbegriz with cocoa (semolina pudding) specialities. The strudel cake is also a big favourite, often ordered for birthdays.
Sandwich Mecca (Szendvics Mekka)
The Sandwich Mecca section operates with the same dedication. They knead and bake their own buns, and the meat patty is also seasoned and shaped on-site before being cooked on the grill.
Reform Foods
The ingredients for the sandwiches, salads, and pasta dishes are carefully selected. Pasta can be ordered with millet or barley, and the characteristic homemade basil pesto or olive cream makes them truly distinctive. The soup of the day is always new, additive-free, homemade in flavour, and milk- and gluten-free, making it a safe choice for those on a diet. A great strength of the place is that it caters to all dietary needs: from meat-eaters to vegans and those following a Paleo diet, everyone can leave satisfied.
Syrups
The homemade syrups—sour cherry, lemon, ginger, mint-lemon balm lavender, and other flavours—are freshly made and can also be taken home bottled.
Sights in the Area
The Végh-Pataki Strudel House and Sandwich Mecca is located in the immediate vicinity of the Festetics Castle; as soon as someone steps out of the castle’s front garden gate, they immediately spot the cosy terrace. Plenty of programs await visitors in the area all year round: the castle’s permanent and temporary exhibitions, the Hunting Exhibition, and the Historical Model Railway Exhibition are all within easy walking distance. The Fejőház Historical Playroom, located behind the Hunting Exhibition building, offers a special experience for children, who can step into the world of the 19th century for a short time.
