Located along the shore of Lake Balaton in picturesque surroundings, the Halászcsárda – Fisherman’s Tavern is a Festetics heritage, and welcomes its guests with Hungarian cuisine and Balaton fish dishes.
The excellent restaurant offers an unrivalled selection of Balaton fish dishes and authentic Hungarian flavours to visitors.
The restaurant’s menu is mainly characterised by traditional dishes, which can be enjoyed with live music in the restaurant’s garden during the summer. The Halászcsárda also offers event hosting services, up to 150 people, so weddings and family celebrations can also be held here.
Picturesque Environment
The Halászcsárda is located in a picturesque environment, in the southern part of Keszthely, on the shores of Lake Balaton, directly next to the Helikon Beach. It is far away from the noise of the city, so we can peacefully enjoy our meals, the silence is occasionally broken by the gentle murmurs of the Balaton waves and the chirps of the birds.
Traditional Flavours
In the inn – as its name implies – the wide selection of Balaton fish dishes dominates, without claiming completeness, mentioning some delicacies: greaves from fish fillet, traditional Balaton fisherman’s soup, pike-perch fillet, catfish paprikash. The fish dishes are complemented by the delicacies of Hungarian cuisine: beef tatar, beef goulash, Zala dumplings, crispy pork knuckles. Among the desserts we find the famous Gundel pancakes, and the stretched home-made strudel.
The Story of the Halászcsárda
The inn opened its doors on June 24, 1934, built by the Festetics family modeled after the Hortobágy Inn. We can find the oldest restaurant in Keszthely on numerous old postcards and photos. The building can proudly claim the title of one of the most patinated buildings in the city, with its unique columns, known throughout the country. Unfortunately, its thatched roof burned down in the 1980s and was then renovated, but it stood empty for about 20 years. Since 2012 it has been welcoming guests again.
If you come here, don’t miss…
As previously written, the Fisherman’s Inn is located on the Balaton shore, where a hearty meal can be followed by a pleasant walk. On the shore you can find the Helka and Kelen Statue, which we wouldn’t even think hides a real Balaton legend, a love story behind it. The work of the Zala county woodcarvers made of oak has been on display on the shore since 2010.
Opening Hours, Parking
The inn is open all year round, except for a short winter break. Free parking is possible in the immediate vicinity of the inn.
