125 years – museum history exhibition

The museum history exhibition, opened on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the foundation of the Balaton Museum, aims to present the history of the institution and what has contributed to its survival over the past 125 years.

The Balaton Museum will celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2023. With this exhibition, the Museum aims to show what the Balaton Museum has been like, what it has been about and how it has survived uninterrupted over the past 125 years.
Visitors are invited to visit a museum history exhibition, a journey! A journey back in time, not only through the 125 years of the Museum, from before its “birth” to the time when it was on the verge of disappearing, but also to the present day. They can travel back to prehistoric times through the Museum’s collections of narrative objects. They can relive the past of the people who lived in the Lake Balaton region, witness the rise and fall of great empires, and follow the lives of our ancestors from the conquest to the recent past.

The Museum’s 15 collections and collection units present objects that have not been seen by the general public for decades or even at all, and their uniqueness makes them stand out from similar objects in museums in our country or even in other museums in Europe.

The archaeological collection covers all archaeological periods and cultures, and finds from the area have become the names of archaeological concepts.

The exhibition also gives a glimpse into the life of the museum, behind the scenes.
